World of Warcraft Anyone?

April 19, 2007

You heard it right.. I have to admit, I am officially hooked! World of Warcraft (WoW) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set in the Warcraft world. In plain-speak, this means you can create a character in an online, virtual world. This character can be chosen from a number of available races and able to specialize in various classes and professions.

I used to be an old-skool pen & paper Dungeon & Dragons (D&D) player back in the day, so I’m quite familiar with D&D based rule-sets. My childhood best friend’s brother was the Dungeon Master (DM) and he would invite some friends over and we’d have an evening of fantasy role-playing over soda and popcorn. At the time, I had a pretty high level Elf Archer.

Fast forward a bit, after watching many previews on the High Definition (HD) video game channel, I decided to take the plunge! Better yet, after describing the concept to my wife, she wanted to join the fun! We’ve been playing for a couple of weeks and I have a level 9 Night Elf Hunter and she has a level 8 Night Elf Druid. To change things up a bit, she started up a alternate character and now has a level 9 Undead Warlock! She definitely has the upper hand compared to me, but I’ve started up a new Tauren Shaman to join her on The Horde. The Warcraft world is divided into 2 opposing factions. One faction being called The Alliance and the other faction is The Horde.

Enough about the details. If you want to read more about WoW and get some idea of what it is, check out The World of Warcraft Game Guide. I have to warn you, it can be a very addictive game! There’s nothing like logging onto the server to see a couple of hundred other players roaming around in the virtual world. You can group with other players and complete quests. You can join raiding parties and attack cities of the opposing faction. You can head to the arena for some virtual capture-the-flag, or team vs team battle. You can focus on professions like mining and skinning to create your own weapons or clothing. You can customize your character by assigning attribute points and enhancing skills in certain talent trees… The options are endless.
