Replaced My Ghost Saber

March 6, 2008

ghostsaber_bulldazhorWell, I guess the title of my posts really says it all. When my hunter hit level 40, I made an effort to go and tame the infamous ghost saber. My ghost saber, ultraviolet, has been at my side for more than 22 levels, but now finds his place in the stables.

The main reason for the switch is looking for a higher damage per second (DPS) pet. It appears that once you hit the outlands, Ravagers are the way to go in terms of DPS for beastmaster hunters. The main reason is learnable skill of gore:

Summary: Gores the enemy, causing damage. This attack has a 50% chance to inflict double damage.

I had this ability with my previous tanking pet, the bellygrub boar. A 50% chance to inflict double damage is quite high!  How could any hunter looking for a DPS pet pass that up? As such, I decided to get myself a Quillfang Ravager. The main reasons were due to it’s innate skills of Bite 8, Gore 8.crawlerelite_green

The main pet skills I choose are: growl, dash, gore, cobra reflexes, greater stamina

After a night of running some instances with my real life buddies, I knew I had made the right choice. My ravager, avocado, can do some off-tanking and DPS like a mutha!

Grinding a Ghost Saber

September 14, 2007

After hitting level 40 with my Blood Elf Hunter and getting a mount in World of Warcraft (WoW), I decide to tame a new pet. HOWEVER, the pet I’ve recently tamed is 20 levels below me! Finding more time sinks, I’ve decided to stop leveling with my tanking bellygrub boar, and tame myself the infamous ghost saber.

For some strange reason, I *have* to do things the hard way. Both of my pets can only be found in alliance territory. Playing on a PvP realm, traveling into alliance territory is not the easiest feat. Basically, there is ample opportunity to get ganked by ANY high level alliance roaming around the area. But for a hunter who must have certain pets, I consider it a rite of passage.

The start of my journey began at the Zoram’Gar Outpost in Ashenvale and headed north upon my purple hawkstrider mount. Along the way, I gathered many copper ores that I would eventually smelt and sell in the local auction house. After about 25 minutes, I made it to the northern part of Darkshore where the summoning of the ghost saber would occur.

The ghost saber is a random spawn after looting tiny cat figurines. Forty minutes later, I had 4 cat figurines with little to show. Upon opening the 5th cat figurine, the ghost saber appeared! It attacked me and instantly my lowly 23 level boar, which I pulled out of the stables, began attacking. Frantically, I put my pet on passive, laid down an ice trap to encapsulate the ghost saber, and began taming the beast. I’ve heard horror stories about multiple attempts to tame, but I was successful after the first try.

I now had myself a level 20 ghost saber! He was unhappy and his loyalty level was unruly. I began feeding him the best food in my bag to raise his mood to happy. Next, I began commanding him to attack various mobs to raise his experience and loyalty, however I soon noticed he was not gaining ANY experience points as the mobs were gray and therefore too low for me to gain experience.

Now, I find myself out in the Swamp of Sorrows, grinding the dreaming whelps. Why? My wife has her eye on the Emerald Whelpling non-combat pet. If I’m going to grind, might as well do it for a rare drop 🙂 As of last night, my ghost saber, which I named ‘ultraviolet’, is now at level 25. The progression is slow, but it will be worth it in the end to have a nice Damage-Per-Second (DPS) pet versus my tanking (ie, high level armor) pet.
